Rock crawling has slowly been gaining popularity in the radio control scene in the last couple of years. It really skyrocketed in 2007 and is still on the rise in 2008. Multiple companies have introduced and as well as started to produce Ready to Run crawlers, so it is no surprise that Duratrax has joined the ranks. Duratrax is now introducing its 1/14 scale Cliff Climber rock crawler to the scene.
The most noticeable trait of this new crawler is its size. Most other crawlers on the market are 1/10 scale and larger such as Axial’s AX10 Scorpion, where as the Cliff Climber is just 1/14th. It measures approximately 14.2 inches long and 9 inches wide making it one of the smallest crawlers on the market today.
Out of the box it comes with four-wheel steering, and a servo mounted over each axle for more precise steering. It also uses a unique motor setup similar to Tamiya’s Clodbuster. A low RPM 380 sized motor is mounted to each axle which eliminates the need for drive shafts, therefore reducing rotational mass on the truck. Since there are two motors, a 16.8 volt electronic speed control handles the extra power.
The suspension looks plush and features adjustable aluminum shock absorbers complete with aluminum shock caps. The four wheel drive system includes hardened steel axles with solid spools, in turn eliminating the need for differentials. The Cliff Climbers gets its traction through the extra soft compound tires with low rebound foams mounted on imitation bead lock wheels. These will provide much more traction to climb over steep obstacles.
The truck will be available in six different color schemes, come in RTR or ARTR form, and be powered by a Tactic two channel radio system. All in all it looks like Duratrax has another serious contender on their hands and it will be interesting to see how it compares to other crawlers on the market.
