New engine from JP

JP 21 P-7L engine

JP inform us that they have just released a new 1/8th scale on-road car engine, the JP 21 P-7L. This engine will be aimed at the budget end of the market, enabling people to own a JP engine without having to go to extraordinary expense. They have also released an 1/8th scale off road engine and a 1/10th scale touring engine within the same 'firstline' range.

JP crank

The crankshaft has been made in one piece without the addition of extra balancing weights – presumably this brings down manufacturing costs, but it is still drilled and filled out with putty to lighten it. The onroad engines uses turbo glow plugs while the off-road version uses standard plugs.

Our verdict: This is great news! JP have been producing great engines and are very strong both Europe and in the US – 1st and 2nd in the latest French 1/8th on-road race and 1st and 3rd in the US winternats with their ‘Eagle’ engine. Where they may have saved money is on the machining of the cast engine block, and errors here will hurt performance, but they are still using their standard bearings. With JP entering the budget market expect this to be a strong and durable engine at a good price.
